clicking through this weekend with a mix of work and play, mostly work. labor day weekend involving, erm, mostly labor. but ironically, i'm not too put out about it.
the netflix movies i rented are turning out not to be as interesting as i had hoped. i rented shogun and oh god are the western actors' accents bad when they try to speak in japanese... mercy! i'm going to bite my tongue and watch the rest so i can understand the references to shogun from now on but yeesh... their pronunciation is so very abysmal that it's hard to take. i ended up watching it without any english subtitles and that was interesting in itself -- i felt like i was in on the secret stuff, the japanese that the dutch, english and portuguese weren't getting in the movie. and it is interesting to try and imagine what the first japanese encounters with the west were like. but how did the japanese side of things become normal to me? there was a day when it would have been anything but...
overall, though, shogun is not exactly rocking my world so i'm actually more tuned into getting my work done. go figure. it won't always be thus and there is a vacation somewhere on the horizon. but for now if i'm riding this wave, i'm gonna ride it. so to keep me motivated and humming i'm running on a mix of the donnas, veruca salt, the vines and hole. i want to hear nothing but loud music right now. l-o-u-d. i just found out (thank you wikipedia) that veruca salt is back together and releasing an album this month! they are one of my all-time favorite bands and they wail so i am extremely thrilled about this. i have been a big fan of their heavy guitar-driven sound since i first heard them at a fellow american's house in nagoya circa 1999. glad to have them back.
