i've admired nickel creek ever since one i ran across one of their songs on my college buddy's mix cd, folkin' excellent. i was eager to hear their new album why let the fire die, which just came out, but when i queued up the ipod to hear their opening song "when in rome" i was really taken aback. even better than before, more raw, more percussive, and political! they should keep on in this direction and really unhinge the sound further. my only quibble about their previous albums was that they sounded a bit muffled.
we've got differing opinions in my musical family about whether or not music (or art for that matter) should be political and make social commentary. i believe it should and rejoice when it does -- art is all about consciousness of varying stripes as it is. none of us lives in a vaccuum. acting as if we're not affected by our society and pretending that everything is just fine does no one any good. what about being an artist means you're not entitled to the same opinions regular people express as residents of the good old usa? free speech for all but the creative?
nickel creek incorporates the sounds of bluegrass, of country. as american as it gets. that's what makes their message even better considering some right-wingers out there have seen fit to define leftists as un-american or even anti-american. better be careful about what you call unpatriotic, neocons. you're tagging a lot more people with that label than you think. they might even be making the music you like.
thanks for this valuable information. is what I was looking
and has served me much. Greetings!
